Ikebukuro by Night

Tokyo, 2017. Near Ikebukuro.

Ikebukuro is an interesting part of Tokyo that sits in a kind of limbo. It has a reputation for an underground youth scene involving the street arts, anime, and music that grew from an earlier period in the 1970s of cheap rents and nearby universities that founded the manga creative wave in Japan – but since the early 2000s this has slowly been in decay. Though you can still find many aspects of these still, the place is changing – The last of the old alleyways and underground places are disappearing and the West Gate Park Area is almost unrecognizable.

This part of the city was the feature of DERIVE Wander #2 which was explored together with friend and fellow wanderer Masashi Wakui.
